Detroit Lights, Holiday Sights and a Weekend of Restoration

In this special holiday edition of Franchise Fuel: Smarter Growth, I take you with me through an unforgettable Thanksgiving weekend filled with community, celebration, and reflection. The journey begins at Jennifer Caira Lauff’s holiday gathering—owner of The Caira Team with Real Estate One—where warm conversation and her famously delicious holiday pies set the tone for the entire weekend. From there, we head into the heart of Downtown Detroit for the historic Thanksgiving Parade, a cozy stop at the Cadillac Lodge, and a magical stroll through Campus Martius Park beneath the brilliant glow of Detroit’s Christmas tree. The adventure continues up in Frankenmuth, where my wife and I enjoyed a three-course feast at Zehnder’s and a peaceful walk across the iconic Holz-Brücke wooden bridge. Back home, we kept the momentum going with laps and holiday shopping at Laurel Park Place Mall before braving a Sunday snowstorm to attend worship at Kingdom Builders Christian Church. Throughout the episode, I highlight Detroit’s remarkable growth and revitalization, reflecting on past podcast discussions about the city’s long-term projections and renewed sense of community. Join me as we celebrate gratitude, rest, and the ongoing story of a city—and a season—filled with hope.

Chapter 1

Pies, People, and the Spirit of Community

Vern Nicholson

There’s something grounding about the unofficial start of the holiday season—the moment when gatherings take precedence over schedules and conversations matter more than checklists. For me, that moment arrived at Jennifer Caira Lauff’s holiday party. Jennifer is a highly respected realtor and owner of The Caira Team with Real Estate One, and although she didn’t handle my transactions personally, she guided my wife through four home transactions over the years. Because of that, stepping into Aspen Restaurant felt like reconnecting with someone who has played a meaningful role in my family’s story.

Vern Nicholson

Jennifer and her mother greeted everyone with her signature warmth, but the highlight—besides seeing her thriving—was the beautiful spread of holiday pies she provided. And when I say these pies were good, I mean holiday magic at its finest. Flaky crusts, rich fillings, flavors that instantly pull you into the season. People weren’t just enjoying pie; they were savoring the feeling of nostalgia, family, and celebration baked into every slice.

Vern Nicholson

We spent time catching up with Jennifer, hearing about the continued growth of her real estate team, and reflecting together on how much Detroit and its surrounding communities have transformed over the years. That theme of renewal—of people and places—became a subtle thread that followed me through the entire Thanksgiving weekend.

Vern Nicholson

Leaving Aspen Restaurant with a full stomach and a fuller spirit, I knew the weekend ahead would be something special. And the next stop was a Detroit classic that never disappoints.

Chapter 2

Parades, Cocoa & the Magic of Downtown Detroit

Vern Nicholson

Thanksgiving morning brought with it one of Detroit’s most treasured traditions: The Detroit Thanksgiving Parade. The floats towered above the crowds, each one more creative and vibrant than the last. The marching bands filled the air with energy and pride, amplifying the feeling that Detroit’s comeback isn’t just visible—it’s alive.

Vern Nicholson

After the parade, the natural move was to warm up at the Cadillac Lodge, tucked cozily into the heart of downtown. The place radiates charm—rustic décor, soft lighting, and the unmistakable aroma of hot cocoa drifting through the air. I wrapped my hands around that cup like it was a small fireplace, letting the warmth sink in.

Vern Nicholson

From there, my wife and I walked to Campus Martius Park, where Detroit’s massive Christmas tree stood in full splendor. Illuminated against the ever-growing skyline, the tree felt like a symbol not just of the season, but of the revitalization sweeping across the city. New restaurants, renovated office spaces, residential towers, art installations—Downtown Detroit has become a hub of activity, and during the holidays, that energy is especially vibrant.

Vern Nicholson

Watching families skate on the ice rink, hearing laughter echo through the park, and seeing lights reflect off the buildings reminded me of the Detroit I’ve talked about in previous podcast episodes—a Detroit rising, thriving, and anchoring itself in community once again.

Vern Nicholson

Before we left the Cadillac Lodge, my wife and I took a short walk over to visit Sarah Feldman’s shop, BESPOKE BY FELDMAN, tucked right into the festive energy of the area. Sarah’s craftsmanship is incredible—rich, beautifully treated leather, clean stitching, and designs that feel both modern and timeless. Her bags, wallets, and accessories stood out as perfect examples of Detroit’s entrepreneurial spirit: small businesses thriving alongside the city’s revitalization. It was inspiring to see a local artisan creating pieces with such care and intention, and it added an unexpected but memorable layer to our downtown experience.

Vern Nicholson

Satisfied and inspired, we pivoted from the lights of the city to the peaceful charm of Michigan’s German-themed getaway.

Chapter 3

Recharge Mode: Frankenmuth Food, Fresh Air & Holiday Joy

Vern Nicholson

One thing I’ve learned—especially balancing the responsibilities of career, community, and creativity—is that intentional rest is essential. So heading to Frankenmuth for the weekend was exactly the timeout I needed. The Frankenmuth River Place Shops welcomed us with their Bavarian-inspired charm, twinkling Christmas decorations, and the steady hum of holiday shoppers moving from store to store. Every corner felt festive, warm, and peaceful.

Vern Nicholson

But the centerpiece of the trip was our dinner at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth. My wife and I sat down to a three-course meal that reminded us why the restaurant has such a timeless reputation. Warm rolls, perfectly seasoned dishes, and desserts rich enough to stop all conversation for a moment—it was a dining experience that fed more than the body; it fed the soul.

Vern Nicholson

On 11/28, after our meal, we took a slow walk across the Holz-Brücke (Wooden Bridge), its history and craftsmanship adding depth to the chilly evening. The sound of the river beneath us, the crisp air, and the soft glow of Frankenmuth’s lights created a peaceful backdrop for reflection. I felt grateful—not only for rest, but for moments like these that reconnect you to what matters most.

Vern Nicholson

Rejuvenated, we headed back home ready to move, explore, and squeeze in a bit of holiday shopping before the weekend wrapped up.

Chapter 4

Steps, Gifts & Holiday Momentum at Laurel Park Place

Vern Nicholson

With our spirits lifted and energy restored, we continued our weekend by heading to Laurel Park Place Mall—a great spot to get our steps in while also conquering the early stages of Christmas shopping. There’s something satisfying about looping the mall, checking off gift ideas, and soaking in the holiday décor that now seems to spill out of every storefront.

Vern Nicholson

My wife and I made it our unofficial mission to find meaningful gifts—items that felt thoughtful, personal, and reflective of the people we love. From warm winter accessories to handcrafted pieces and children’s toys, Laurel Park Place delivered. Every store offered something different, and slowly but surely, our shopping bags multiplied.

Vern Nicholson

Beyond the purchases, the mall offered space to talk, laugh, and plan out the rest of our holiday season. Malls have a way of anchoring you in nostalgia—memories of childhood shopping trips, family traditions, and the excitement that builds as December draws near.

Vern Nicholson

As we wrapped up our laps and loaded the car with gifts, my thoughts shifted toward the next chapter of the weekend—one that required commitment regardless of weather conditions.

Chapter 5

Faith in the Storm: Worship at Kingdom Builders Christian Church

Vern Nicholson

Michigan weather doesn’t negotiate, and on Sunday, the snowstorm arrived right on schedule. But despite the swirling snow and slick roads, my wife and I were committed to attending Sunday service at Kingdom Builders Christian Church. The moment we stepped inside, the warmth of the sanctuary contrasted beautifully with the storm outside. Worship filled the room, creating a sense of grounding and gratitude.

Vern Nicholson

There is something powerful about gathering with your church family after a long weekend of celebration and rest. The message, the music, the community—it all served as a reminder of what truly sustains us. The storm may have raged outside, but inside, peace was abundant.

Vern Nicholson

Leaving service, I felt anchored, refreshed, and grateful for both the physical and spiritual nourishment of the weekend.
